Brexit Free Trade Deal On Brink Of Agreement

BREXIT Secretary Stephen Barclay is currently meeting the EU's chief negotiator after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart agreed they could "see a pathway to a possible deal".

However, it’s understood that the focus has now shifted to a free trade deal so that Britain can exit the EU smoothly on October 31st.

A Downing Street source told TBG that the government believes it is a "cleaner and more straightforward" approach that could form the foundation for a more wide-ranging deal.

A number of EU nations have made it clear that they will support a proposal if it is backed by the Irish prime minister.

These concepts are similar to the ideas proposed last week, which Mr Barnier lambasted in the European Parliament.

However, they believe that, if they can secure Mr Varadkar's support, the tide could turn in their favour.

It would be a remarkable climbdown on the part of the EU and a major victory for Boris Johnson.

If anything this morning, in the words of Robert Peston, “there is a striking degree of optimism that a Brexit deal is possible.”
