Former MP Says Bercow Must Go

Speaker Bercow

FORMER Reading MP Rob Wilson has today sensationally called on Brexiteers to get rid of Commons Speaker John Bercow before he gives the green light to a Brexit Coup.

Writing in today’s Daily Telegraph, Mr Wilson says - “He is now where he has always wanted to be, at the centre of public life, in every newspaper and on every TV screen, high profile and with an influence a Common’s Speaker has probably never had before.”

“ Bercow will no doubt see his ability to insert himself into moulding of the affairs of state, usually exclusively the purview of Governments, as a personal triumph.”

“He has finally outwitted the people and party he ostensibly grew to despise, even hate, on his journey leftwards in politics.”

“Clearly Bercow’s whole Speakership is built on the very essence of partisanship and bias, as he is to his fingertips a political operator in a role that requires honesty, decency and fairness to all sides.”

“On Tuesday this is the man who will grant Remainer MPs a route to delay and possibly stop Brexit ever happening.”

“He will be asked to grant a Standing Order 24 emergency motion that will debate giving power to Parliament to take control over the order paper from the executive.”

“But in an unprecedented step, it will allow MPs to make a law to stop a 31 October Brexit.”

“It is remarkable that any Speaker might consider setting new Parliamentary precedent in such a manner.”

“This is why, as soon as they return on Tuesday, MPs must test the mood of the House before the Speaker is complicit in overturning the Referendum result of 2016.”

“Many MPs, whilst murmuring and privately protesting about Bercow’s behaviour in the past, have done little or nothing in supporting colleagues who have wanted to bring matters to a head.”

“This is now their final chance and the time for vacillation and weakness is over.”

“They must use every mechanism at their disposal, and the Government must facilitate their actions.”

“There are a range of options, some of which the Speaker will try to squash - although as it is a conflict of interest.”

“For Bercow it should be passed to the Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, to decide.”

“Once the Speaker had lost his independence in the chair, what is he there for?”

“So wouldn’t it be a delicious irony to hold a Standing Order 24 emergency debate aimed to remove the Speaker from office, accused of bullying, bias and taking partisan steps to assist Remainers in Parliament.”

“Urgent Questions need to be asked on the floor of the House, a debate needs to be held in Government time, an Early Day Motion needs to go down with significant numbers of signatures.”

“Speaker Martin was essentially forced out of office through an Early Day Motion.”

“Surely a similar sizeable loss of confidence would show Bercow has lost the support of many in the House.”

“It is now time for MPs to grow the backbone that has been missing for the past few years and take on John Bercow openly and directly.”

“He is not protecting the constitution or Parliament, as some would have us believe.”

“He is part of a movement to defeat the Government and Brexit.”

“Any MP that allows this to stand should remember what is at stake – our democracy and the will of 17.4 people as expressed in the Referendum.”
