Lib Dems wanted the other guy, that didn't apply.

Lib Dems have tonight selected Mike Thornton from Bishopstoke as their candidate for the Eastleigh by-election. The local Business and Development Manager has been a councilor since 2007.

Rumour is that Lib Dems wanted Portsmouth City Council Leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson to stand but he didn't apply. Mr Vernon-Jackson was part of the Lib Dems negotiating team during coalition talks in 2010.

Upon selection Cllr Mike Thornton said - "We have been delivering locally for two decades, and we’re now also delivering in Government. I’m confident I will continue with that incredible record, and ensure we have another Liberal Democrat MP."
