Manchester Council chief wants to control railways.

A public sector council chief has today called for local councils to take control of the railways.

Manchester City Council Chief Executive Howard Bernstein says that the regions train network is the key to driving economic growth and that the West Coast Mainline fiasco proves his point.

Bernstein wants to merge Northern Rail and Trans Penine Express and team up with other councils to take over the railways in the North.

Sir Howard told tbg. that - "Once this government has got over the West Coast Mainline Debacle we need to push to take control of franchises."

"We have put together a consortium and are going to be the centrepiece of a big bid for a rail franchise."
